What do Frog Call Survey volunteers do? •Monitors drive along a 5 mile route, stopping at monitoring points approx. every ½ mile. At each stop, the volunteer listens for 5 minutes and records data on the data sheets provided. Because this is a new program, volunteers will be given a starting point when they sign up so they can create their route using the route creation instructions and forms provided.
When and how often do we conduct the runs? The more data we gather the better. So, ideally you would monitor every other week (14 times) from February 15 through August 15. However, we know people get busy, so the minimum is once during each of the 4 peak periods (4 times), shown in the table to the right.
What Time of Day is the Frog Call Survey done? From February 15 through March 31, monitoring should be done in the late afternoon and early evening since this is when wood frogs are most active. From April 1 through August 15, monitoring should be done at least 30 minutes after sunset. Ideal monitoring conditions are at night, when the temperatures are warm and it's either misty/rainy or humid. This is when frogs and toads are calling the most.
