“Oh cage me not, lest I become a prisoner to man’s ego.

Deny me not my right to fly in God’s blue sky and spy upon those mortals there below.

Then when I see a friend, I may descend to serenade.

And when my song is o’er, away on freedom’s wings to soar.”

- Mae Hickman

Wildlife rehabilitation is a special skill that requires training through apprenticeship and ultimately a permit from the state of Virginia.

The resources below are designed to provide you with an introduction to this important field. If you encounter a wild animal in need of help, please contact one of the organizations listed below for steps on what to do. This is for your safety and the welfare of the animals..

If you are interested in becoming a wildlife rehabber, the organizations below can help you do that as well.

Links to Wildlife Rehab Organizations

Wildlife Rescue League
A terrific local resource to call if you find injured wild life. They have a network of rehabbers across Virginia. They will provide advice on what to do and where to bring the animal in order to transfer it to a rehabber. If you have found an injured animal, please call their hotline: 703-440-0800.
Blue Ridge Wildlife Center
A great group of wildlife rehabilitators. They provide assistance to native injured and orphaned wildlife and offer helpful information to the public. They serve the Shenandoah Valley and Northern Blue Ridge region of Virginia including Clarke, Frederick, Warren, Shenandoah, Fauquier and Loudoun counties.
Second Chance Wildlife Center
Wildlife rehab center located just across the river in Gaithersburg, MD. This site provides further insights into wildlife rehabbing, photographs of some of the patients, info on volunteering and open hours for their visitor center.
