When you have found a bird's nest, you have found him out. You have found the very center of his life, and his dearest secret. In the case of small, ground-nesting bird especially, the difference between secrecy and discovery is the difference between success and failure, life and death, continuance and oblivion...small wonder that birds hide their nests with every last evolved instinctual whit of cunning that they have.

A Great Place

The Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship was founded by the Robert and Dee Leggett Foundation. In 2005, BRCES became more independent of the foundation, requiring additional community support.

BRCES is 895 acres of diverse habitat consisting of vernal pools, meadows, streams and wonderful forests. There are historic cabins and homesteads on the property in addition to a community farm. We always enjoy a diversity of birds on our bird walks. We see a wide variety of butterflies here as well, including the checkered skipper.

The Blue Ridge Center is an amazing place to walk through trails, photograph wildlife, explore archeological sites and even enjoy the bounty of vegetables from the working farm. A variety of workshops and activities are offered.
