Majestic fliers with a wingspan of six feet! We see Great Blue Herons in a variety of places around Loudoun County. In March or April they started nesting and now they are busy raising their young. For those living in the Ashburn area, there’s a wonderful heron rookery where over 50 Great Blue Heron nests can be seen. It’s amazing.
These are pretty interesting birds…read through our article on Great Blue Herons and then try our Great Blue Herons crossword puzzle.

Nicole, Where in Ashburn is the heron rookery?
Hi Eileen,
It’s located off of Loudoun County Parkway. If you’re on Rte 7 and turn onto Loudoun County Parkway, it’s up about 1/2(?) mile on your left, near the sod farm. There’s a wetland mitigation sign on the side of the road and a pull-off. Across the big field is a stand of Sycamore trees – they’re up in there. You’ll definitely need binoculars to see them (a little tough with the leaf cover this time of year but the stick nests are quite large).
